Free2Luv Co-Hosts #LoveWins Essay Competition

What does it mean to you to be Free2Luv? To celebrate the recent SCOTUS ruling, we’re excited to be co-hosting a special “Love Wins” essay competition with New Millennium Writings (NMW), an award-winning literary journal founded in 1996.  We’re calling for essays asking people what the recent SCOTUS decision means to them and their community. The winner will receive $1,000 and publication in the NMW anthology and on their website. The contest will run from July 8th to August 31st.

The Love Wins essay award winner will be chosen by Guest Judge and Free2Luv Celebrity Ambassador Thea Gill, actress, singer, and LGBTQ activist, best known for her starring role as Lindsay Peterson in the landmark Showtime television series Queer as Folk. Ms. Gill will choose the top winner from selected finalists, and the award will be announced on October 11th, National Coming Out Day.

“Special contests like this are a rarity for NMW,” says Alexis Williams Carr, Editor and Publisher of New Millennium Writings. “We ran one on the eve of the millennium and another in 2008 to celebrate America’s first black president – two other momentous events that impacted our nation and the entire world. We’re thrilled to add the Love Wins essay competition to that list and to partner with Free2Luv and Lambda Literary.”

Founding Editor Don Williams added, “Events like this truly embody what we have long hoped the New Millennium will bring – a breaking down of barriers, an embrace of tolerance, and an acknowledgement of unity on the planet. This competition is an opportunity for people to share their opinions, reactions and personal stories.”

Entries into the Love Wins essay competition must be 4,500 words or less. For more info regarding entries, visit New Millennium Writings.

New York Times Best-Selling Author, Anna Todd Teams Up With Free2Luv to Create a New Original Story, FREE

Anna Todd, best-selling author of the fabulously successful After series with over 1 billion reads to date, has begun serializing FREE, a spin off story featuring Riley and Lillian’s love story to bring awareness to youth empowerment organization, Free2Luv®. Riley and Lillian are opposites, just like every main character set in a romance novel, but they are different. Their LGBT love story addresses the struggles and rewards of being FREE to love. Anna Todd, a Celebrity Ambassador for Free2Luv, has created this story to support the LGBTQ community and advocacy that Free2Luv represents.

“Everyone should be free to love whomever they choose. That’s the message of FREE, my latest Wattpad story,” said Anna Todd. “I’m inspired by the mission of Free2Luv; they are giving a voice to people who need it and they are so passionate about what they stand for. I see the way teens think and I spend a lot of my time engaging with them and Free2Luv’s voice is needed so much right now. I’m incredibly honoured to be one of their Ambassadors. It’s an amazing feeling to be part of an organization that helps so many young people.”

“We are very excited about this partnership with Anna Todd. Her voice is relevant to teens today and her reach is enormous. We are thrilled to be able to share this love story with youth who may be questioning their own sexuality or searching for a place to fit in. Our goal is to create a safe and inclusive environment that offers teens a creative outlet for their myriad of emotions. They can share their stories, connect with other youth having similar experiences and know that they are not alone,” says Co-Founder and President of Free2Luv, Tonya Sandis.

The LGBT community is no stranger to bullying with 9 out of 10 LGBT students experiencing harassment at school and online and 20% of high school students saying they have seriously considered suicide. Free2Luv believes this epidemic needs to stop. Anna Todd and Free2Luv have created FREE to help bring awareness to this epidemic. Their collective goal is to raise self-esteem and re-instill hope in our youth so that no young person is left feeling alone, unwanted, or less than perfect just the way they are.

FREE is currently being serialized on Wattpad, the world’s largest community of readers and writers. The first two chapters of FREE have been released at and the story already has over 114,000 reads and has been translated by fans in Arabic, French, German, Portuguese, Romanian, Spanish, Italian and Dutch.

We invite you to view and share our powerful PSA that aired at the 2014 Indianapolis Motor Speedway Brickyard 400 NASCAR event, the second largest sporting event in the world.

Anti-bullying Video Launch

Seattle, WA – June 3, 2014 – “When I bullied somebody, I didn’t really think about it at the time. A few years later, I realized there’s not much difference between us,” says Michael, 8th grader.  Profound statements like these are why Free2Luv, a Seattle nonprofit joined forces with teen rock sensation, Haunted By Heroes to stand up to bullying and spread kindness through music. Today marks the global launch of their anti-bullying music video, ‘Stomp It Out’ and youth everywhere are invited to stand up, speak out and let their voices be heard.

With the rise in teen suicides and 1 out of every 3 children experiencing some form of bullying, it is Free2Luv and Haunted By Heroes’ collective mission to reach as many communities and children as possible to spread the word that every person is perfect just the way they are.  The ‘Stomp It Out’ music video project was a collaborative effort spearheaded by teen rockers, Haunted By Heroes who rallied 5 middle schools in the Bay Area to participate in this interactive music video ▶▶

Haunted By Heroes is no stranger to bullying. “It bothers us to see our classmates getting bullied,” the band said in a collective statement. “We defend them because it’s not cool to be picked on by anybody. Watching kids be mean toward someone else, often when that person can’t defend himself, is one of the main reasons we decided to produce the ‘Stomp It Out’ video.”

“Our goal is to start a nationwide movement of youth standing up and making a difference together, using their voices for good,” says Free2Luv Co-Founder, Tonya Sandis. “Our hope is that this music video launch can start a revolution of kindness where kids all over can unite through music, which is a powerful vehicle for creating change.  We are honored to be collaborating with this amazing group of boys, who are not only accomplished musicians but also know how to rock kindness.”

When Free2Luv asked youth how can we stop bullying, the answers were insightful: “You need to be respectful because everyone is equal and we all deserve to be treated with respect,” says Carney, 8thgrader.  “If you got a whole bunch of people who were strong and had a really strong belief in stopping something, then you could really move things,” says Elizabeth, 6th grader.

You can join the movement and stand up to bullying with Free2Luv and Haunted By Heroes. Get involved and learn how you can be an agent for change.
