You feel your heart beginning to beat faster. Sweat builds on your hands or forehead. Your breathing becomes shallow. That’s anxiety – a response to stress. Here are some ways that could help you take control of your mind and body:
- Practice focused, deep breathing– take deep breaths in and deep breaths out for four counts of each. Breath in – 1, 2, 3, 4. Breath out – 1, 2, 3, 4. Do this for at least five minutes. This can even out your breathing, slow your heart rate, and help to calm you down.
- Go for a meditative walk or do yoga– sometimes, it’s beneficial to walk away from the situation that is making you anxious. Take a 15-minute walk and focus just on calming your mind. Listen to the breeze, smell the outside air, and focus on your mind. Or do some yoga. Yoga is a great way to calm your mind and body, as it allows you to focus on both, and this can help relieve your anxiety.
- Progressive muscle relaxation– alternate between tensing and relaxing different muscle groups throughout your body. Start with your toes, move up to your legs, your stomach, your arms, and your neck. Tensing your muscles is a common symptom of anxiety, but by learning to relax those muscles, you’ll help to teach your body to relax when it feels that tension.
- Write down your thoughts– by writing down the thoughts in your head, it helps to get those anxious thoughts out of your head and onto the paper, which can make them seem a little less daunting.
- Practice the 3-3-3 rule.Look around you and name three things you see. Then, name three sounds you hear. Finally, move three parts of your body – your ankle, fingers, or arm. This mental trick can help calm your mind and bring you back to the present moment.
- Use aromatherapy– scents like lavender, chamomile, and sandalwood can be very soothing. It’s thought that aromatherapy activates certain receptors in your brain, which can potentially ease anxiety.
- Pay attention to the good things– focus your thoughts on things that are good, beautiful, and positive in your life. Find appreciation for the small, everyday bright spots in life. Allow yourself to dream, wish, and imagine all the best things that could happen.
